Christian Louboutin X Star Wars
What happens when you combine one of the most prominent shoe designer and one of the most anticipated movies of the year? You get high fashion Star Wars heels. Following the collaboration with Disney's Cinderella (2012) and Maleficent (2014), Christian Louboutin has teamed up with Disney and Lucasfilm to design four exclusive styles to celebrate and embrace the spirit of the heroines from the movie: Rey (Daisy Ridley), Vice Admrial Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern), Captain Phasma (Gwendolin Christie), and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran).
"Disney's call regarding Star Wars was completely unexpected and surprised me. But I like surprises and this one particularly intrigued me! At first sight, the Star Wars universe and mine seemed far away from one another but when I saw the pictures of the red planet Crait, I instantly understood where I connected and why they had thought of me. Strong ideas and images spontaneously came to my mind," -Christian Louboutin
When I saw the pictures of the shoes, I could immediately tell which character it was designed after. There's even a Tie Fighter jewel embellishment on each of them.
- Rey (Daisy Ridley) is portrayed by an ankle-strap leather sandal inspired by the character’s costumes including the harnesses that strap her body, while translucent PVC reflects her Jedi powers and the Force she embodies. The style is finished with a blue strass heel evoking the color of her lightsaber.
- Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo’s (Laura Dern’s) pumps are the natural extension of her costume, directly inspired by her draped burgundy cape and the strong, reserved and empowered character she portrays.
- Captain Phasma’s (Gwendoline Christie’s) shoe is evoked by the curves of her armor, represented by silver specchio leather yokes, reflecting her strict and authoritative character.
- Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) is represented through a utilitarian sandal imagined by Christian Louboutin, depicting a technical, engineering-driven individual. The strong heel protects an inner stiletto, reflecting the shell safeguarding her resilient spirit.
There's also a fifth design to be revealed at the December 9th premiere -- a Ballerina Ultima-inspired spaceship. Christian Louboutin and ILM have created a custom-built, hyper-realistic holographic display to be used for the unveiling, and it'll be guarded by members of the Praetorian Guard.
But where is our beloved Princess Leia in all this? According to Vanity Fair, Louboutin said Carrie Fisher was not forgotten and as he sees it, is in "almost every character." The designer continued: "She has been powerful, funny, feminine, dominating, fragile, secretive, delicate, shy, respected, lonely,” he says with reverence. “There is a part of her character that goes to every single character.”
I'm very lucky to be heading to the Star Wars: The Last Jedi premiere and I can't wait to witness this in person. Make sure to follow me on twitter or instagram (@wendyleeszany) for updates from the premiere.
