Who-liday Cheers At Universal Studios Hollywood
Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood has been an ongoing celebration for years - the Whos whom normally live inside a snowflake has taken over Universal Plaza, along with festive decorations, holiday fare, entertainment, and of course, the mean one - Mr. Grinch. Grinchmas starts on Dec. 1st, starting as a weekend-only event on 12/1, 12/2, 12/8, and 12/9 and begins its daily run from 12/14 ~ 12/30.
Geek & Glitter was invited to check out the festivities. Keep reading to see what the Whos have been up to this Grinchmas.
Meet & Greet
You can meet The Grinch inside Universal Plaza but be aware that this is the only spot where you can meet The Grinch. The wait was over 90 minutes during our visit. You can also meet Grinch’s faithful dog Max, and luckily this line moved much quicker. As a dog parent, getting to meet Max was very special. There are dog trainers on hand at the photo spot to help out and even they got Max to give us a “hug”.
You can meet the citizens of Whoville such as Mayor May who, Cindy Lou Who and many other Whos as they roam Universal Plaza throughout the event. To me, this is one of the most charming part of Grinchmas making it more personal and magical. I love talking to the Whos and taking “who-fies” with them.
Who-liday Fare
There are various sweet and treats offered at Universal Plaza in theme with Grinchmas, but the standout this year, is the Who Hash! It has tater tots, beef, gravy, and green onions. The best part is that it comes in a can that says “Who Hash” on it and really ties into the whole event.
Other treats include sugar cookies (pinwheel design and Star of David design, holiday donuts, peppermint rice krispy treats, cupcakes, Grinch cotton candy, and hot chocolate (peppermint and gingerbread). All is worth trying out, though our favorite was the gingerbread hot chocolate.
Entertainment
Grinchmas has three shows on the main stage. You’ll find Martha May Whovier and her Who Dolls wishing you a Happy Wholiday through song and dance, the Who-liday Singers (Acapella group) belting out harmonies. These musical acts occurs throughout the day so you shouldn’t have any problem catching both.
The first Treelighting show begins at 5:30PM and if seeing the Seussian tree light up is a must-do for you, we suggest you get there early to get a good spot. Seating is very limited in the Plaza, and the main walkway must be left clear for the performers to get through. We started looking for seats about 1 hour before showtime and got decent seats but many people waited for as long as 3 hours to secure good seats.
The Treelighting show is very charming. The cast of Whos including Cindy Lou Who, Mayor May Who, Martha May Whovier, and The Grinch retell of the story of “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. Even though the show is quite short, seeing the tree light up does make one’s heart grow three sizes.
Overall, Grinchmas at Universal Studios Hollywood is a fun and darling event for all ages. Keep in mind that Universal Plaza is the only area dedicated to Grinchmas. You won’t find Whos dancing around on the Studio Tour like in years past and this is the only place to meet The Grinch, so plan accordingly and line up at the photo op early on in your day. There are also tons of holiday and Grinchmas merchandise if you’re looking for gifts or to satisfy your shopping needs.
Grinchmas is included in the price of the park ticket and runs daily from December 14th ~ December 30th.
